Royce Clayton replaced Hall-of-Famer Ozzie Smith as the shortstop for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1996. I could compare Clayton to Smith, but that wouldn't be very fair to Clayton.

Instead, I'm going to compare Royce Clayton to the shortstop who Ozzie Smith replaced on the Cardinals: Garry Templeton. Templeton was the Cardinals' starting shortstop through 1981, before he was traded to the San Diego Padres for Ozzie Smith.

Templeton's last season as the Cardinals' starting shortstop was at age 25. Royce Clayton's first year as the Cardinals' starting shortstop was at age 26.

In his first five full-time seasons (note: Templeton's age 25 season was the strike-shortened 1981 season), Templeton had the looks of a star. Clayton has no match to that portion of Templeton's career. From ages 26 - 32, on the other hand, Templeton and Clayton are actually a very good match:
