I compared Greg Maddux to Roger Clemens in a separate article.

For this article, I thought I'd go a little farther back into baseball history. The next table compares Greg Maddux's best season, 1995, with Lefty Grove's best season, 1931, as measured by Player won-lost records. For Grove, I am missing 0 games because Retrosheet is missing play-by-play data for them. Maddux's 1995 season is also short, although in his case, it's legitimately short because the 1995 season was only 144 games long because of the strike that cancelled the previous year's World Series.

There are very few players who have put up a season that can compare to Lefty Grove's 1931 (31-4, 2.06 ERA, 27 CGs, league-leading 175 Ks). Greg Maddux is one of them.
