This is Larry Walker's fourth year on the Hall-of-Fame ballot. In my 2013 Hall-of-Fame ballot series, I compared Walker's 1994 and 1998 seasons and the very different contexts in which they took place.

This article follows up on a similar theme: how do we control for the context in which Larry Walker played? What does it mean to put up Triple Crown numbers of .366/49/130 when teams scored an average of 6.5 runs per team per game in your home park (Coors Field, 1997)? This article compares Larry Walker's most similar players as measured by Baseball-Reference.com, which looks only at raw offensive statistics without regard to context to Larry Walker's most similar players as I calculate them, controlling for context and considering all aspects of player value.

note: Player Won-Lost records have not been calculated for all of Joe DiMaggio's and Johnny Mize's careers.

Walker's BB-Ref most-similars are an odd bunch. Three Hall-of-Famers, but, frankly, all of whom were better than Larry Walker (and none of whom strike me as all that similar to Walker). A few modern guys with plausible Hall-of-Fame cases - Beltran, Edmonds, Cabrera, Guerrero, maybe Berkman. But Burks and Alou look like odd matches (although looking at their raw offensive statistics, it's easy enough to see how they made the list).

The next table shows the players that I calculate as the 10 players most similar to Larry Walker in career value.

This list also includes three Hall-of-Famers. In addition to Williams, Brett, and Boggs, all four of the other players who are eligible, have been elected to the Hall of Merit (as has Larry Walker) and I suspect that at least Sheffield and Griffey will join them fairly quickly after they become eligible.

They're my Sim Scores so I'm not exactly objective, but I feel like that list of players gives a good sense of exactly how good a player - and how deserving a Hall-of-Fame candidate - Larry Walker really was.
