Through his age 30 season, Luis Gonzalez was a fairly average major-league outfielder who was about to join his fourth major-league team in four seasons. Don't mis-understand me: average major-league outfielders don't grow on trees, they're actually quite rare and valuable.

But then Luis Gonzalez went to Arizona and put together a 5-year prime better than some Hall-of-Famers, and he did it at ages 31 to 35. He then tailed off fairly sharply starting at age 36, although he was able to hang around the major leagues into his age-40 season.

Needless to say, Luis Gonzalez's career followed an unusual pattern. The next three tables here try to put some perspective on the three pieces of his career by trying to find the players most similar to Luis Gonzalez as measured by Player won-lost records.
