This is Mark McGwire's eighth year on the Hall-of-Fame ballot. In my 2013 Hall-of-Fame ballot series, I looked at how many home runs a player in the 1970s would had to have hit to equal the value of Mark McGwire's home runs.

There is a natural tendency to compare players who accumulated their value similarly, so when we think of players "similar" to Mark McGwire, we naturally think of home-run hitting first basemen. For example, the players most similar to McGwire, according to Baseball-Reference.com, include Jason Giambi, Harmon Killebrew, Carlos Delgado, and Willie McCovey, all of whom were power-hitting first basemen.

But baseball players can accumulate value in a lot of different ways: batting, baserunning, fielding, pitching, hitting home runs, hitting doubles, etc.

The next table shows the players whose aggregate career value - as measured by both pWins and eWins, in both levels and also over positional average and replacement level - most closely matches the career value of Mark McGwire, but with no regard for how that value was accumulated.

To me, that's a fun set of comps: 5 pitchers, 2 catchers, a first baseman, a second baseman, and a center fielder. What do Mark McGwire, Carlton Fisk, Bobby Grich, and Don Drysdale have in common? On the surface there's not a lot of similarities between a power-hitting first baseman who only managed to put together 11 healthy seasons, a catcher who played until he was 45 years old, a 4-time Gold Glove winning middle infielder, and a starting pitcher who pitched in 5 World Series and had a reputation as a headhunter. Except that they all put up similar career value - at a level of value that generally warrants serious Hall-of-Fame consideration.
