The 2014 Hall-of-Fame ballot is Tim Raines's seventh appearance on a Hall-of-Fame ballot. In my 2013 Hall-of-Fame ballot series, I looked at Tim Raines's baserunning.

For this year's article on Tim Raines, I decided to compare him to a Hall-of-Famer who I think makes a fairly straightforward comparison that goes a pretty long way toward making a Hall-of-Fame case for Raines: Tim Raines vs. Tony Gwynn.

In his career, Tony Gwynn reached base 3,955 times in 10,232 plate appearances, scoring 1,383 runs and driving in 1,138. In 2007, in his first year on the Hall-of-Fame ballot, Tony Gwynn was named on all but 13 ballots (97.6%) to easily win election to the Hall of Fame.

In his career, Tim Raines reached base 3,977 times in 10,359 plate appearances, scoring 1,571 runs and driving in 980. It took Tim Raines six tries to get over 50% in Hall-of-Fame voting last year.

On the one hand, that's a fairly superficial analysis: no consideration of defense (Gwynn won 5 Gold Gloves; Raines never won one) or park factors or teammate quality. On the other hand, they're 46th and 47th all-time in times on base and their combined career R+RBI totals differ by 30 - and Raines had more! (Heck, they're so similar that they both had sons who shared their names who grew up to be below-average major-league centerfielders for a few years.)

So, what does Player won-lost records say? The next table compares Gwynn and Raines in pWins by age.

They're actually not quite as close as the superficial comparison above suggested. But it's actually not first-ballot Hall-of-Famer Tony Gwynn who ends up looking better.
