Todd Jones got a fairly late start to his major-league career, making his major-league debut at age 25 and not earning even 20 saves in a single season until his age-29 season. Despite the late start, Jones ended up appearing in 982 games in his career, 17th all-time for pitchers.

This is vaguely reminiscent of a player who didn't make his major-league debut until age 29 forty-one years before Jones's debut and proceeded to stick around to set a major-league record for games pitched (a record that has since been passed by five players): Hall-of-Famer Hoyt Wilhelm.

The next table compares the career records of Todd Jones and Hoyt Wilhelm.

Wilhelm pitched nine more seasons after Todd Jones was retired (Todd Jones is four years younger today than Hoyt Wilhelm was when he retired), several of them at a very high level, and Jones had a couple of clunker seasons during his prime (2001, 2003), both of which lead to a much stronger Hall-of-Fame case for Wilhelm than for Jones. But outside of that, Jones actually matches up reasonably (and suprisingly, to me) well with Wilhelm year-by-year.
