Gary Sheffield was the youngest player in the major leagues when he debuted. He started his career as an infielder, but gradually worked his way down the defensive spectrum, never playing particularly well defensively anyplace, ending his career as a designated hitter (and as one of the 10 oldest players in the major leagues). But Sheffield could hit, ending his career with more than 500 home runs, making 9 All-Star games, with 6 top-10 finishes in MVP voting.

This is all vaguely reminiscent of Hall-of-Famer Harmon Killebrew. Killebrew was the youngest player in the major leagues when he debuted. Sheffield played shortstop in his major-league debut. Killebrew debuted as a pinch runner. His first game in the field was at second base. Like Sheffield, Killebrew gradually moved down the defensive spectrum and, like Sheffield, ended his career as as designated hitter (and as one of the 10 oldest players in the major leagues). But Killebrew could hit, ending his career with more than 500 home runs, making All-Star teams in 11 seasons, with 7 top-10 finishes in MVP voting.

The next table compares the careers of Gary Sheffield and Harmon Killebrew, as measured by Player won-lost records.

Killebrew - who is, of course, a deserving Hall-of-Famer - beats Sheffield in career value, although Sheffield has very respectable career totals. For example, Sheffield matches Killebrew in seasons of at least 3 pWins over replacement level (pWORL) with 8 (although Killebrew beats Sheffield in 4 pWORL seasons 5-4). Overall, I think it's an interesting comparison.
