This is Larry Walker's fourth year on the Hall-of-Fame ballot. In my 2013 Hall-of-Fame ballot series, I compared Walker's 1994 and 1998 seasons and the very different contexts in which they took place. My article in the 2013 Hall-of-Fame ballot series looked at the players most similar to Larry Walker, as measured by Player won-lost records.

For this go-round I am going to compare Larry Walker to a Hall-of-Famer from an earlier generation: Duke Snider.

Duke Snider batted .295/.380/.540 for his career with 407 home runs. He hit over 40 home runs 5 times and batted over .320 3 times. He also had 6 top-ten MVP finishes although he never won one.

Larry Walker batted .313/.400/.565 for his career, although this was in a higher run-scoring environment than Snider. Walker hit 383 career home runs but only hit more than 40 home runs one time. But he batted over .320 six times. Walker only had 4 top-ten MVP finishes, but he did win one, in 1997.

The next table compares the careers of Larry Walker and Duke Snider, as measured by (context-neutral, teammate-adjusted) eWins.

Walker and Snider are a pretty good match. Actually, in terms of raw career eWins, eLosses, and eWinPct, Walker and Snider are remarkably similar. Snider does have the three best seasons between the two players (1953, 1954, and 1955) and beats Walker in career value, although not by that much, and Walker beats Snider in seasons over 2 eWins over replacement level (eWORL) 10 - 9.
