This is Mike Mussina's second year on the Hall-of-Fame ballot. In my 2014 Hall-of-Fame ballot series, I compared Mike Mussina to Hall-of-Famer Bert Blyleven.

For this year, I'm going to do another player comparison.

Mike Mussina pitched 10 years in Baltimore, during which time he made five All-Star games, won four Gold Gloves, and received Cy Young votes seven times, finishing as high as second in 1999.

Mike Mussina was probably the second-best pitcher in the history of the Baltimore Orioles, behind 3-time Cy Young winner and first-ballot Hall-of-Famer Jim Palmer.

The next table compares the career records of Mike Mussina and Jim Palmer, as measured by Player won-lost records.

If a comparison were made of only their time as Orioles, Jim Palmer would crush Mike Mussina, since Palmer played his entire 19-year career in Baltimore, while Mussina spent his last 8 seasons in New York. And from 1970 through 1975 (his age-24 through age-29 seasons in the above table), Palmer had 5 seasons in 6 years better than any season in Mike Mussina's career (as measured by pWins over either positional average or replacement level).

But Mussina was better than Palmer every season from age 32 through 39. The result is that, while Palmer was better than Mussina over the course of their careers, it wasn't by all that much.

And, in fact, if you control for context, and do the comparison using eWins - as is shown in the final table of this article - the advantage shifts fairly decisively to Mussina.
