This is Roger Clemens's third year on the Hall-of-Fame ballot. In my 2013 Hall-of-Fame ballot series, I compared Clemens to Mickey Mantle. In my 2014 Hall-of-Fame ballot series, I compared Clemens to Sandy Koufax and then attempted to identify the player's most similar in career value to the excess value of Clemens in his career over Koufax.

For this article, I compare Roger Clemens to Warren Spahn.

The first table below identifies the 10 players most similar to Roger Clemens from age 34 on. Roger Clemens's age-34 season was his first season with the Toronto Blue Jays, when Clemens won the first of consecutive Cy Young Awards in his two seasons in Toronto: 1997 and 1998.

Spahn and Clemens both made their major-league debuts in their age-21 seasons and played their final season at age 44. Spahn only appeared in one major-league game before his age-25 season (1946), because of World War II, while Roger Clemens won back-to-back Cy Young awards in his age-23 and age-24 seasons. From age 25 through age 42, Spahn was actually somewhat more valuable than Clemens (72.3 - 63.4).

But while Warren Spahn ended his career with two below-average seasons, Roger Clemens was above average in every season of his career. Clemens beats Spahn at both ends of their respective careers, which pushes Clemens ahead of Spahn in overall career value.
