This is Sammy Sosa's third year on the Hall-of-Fame ballot. In my 2013 Hall-of-Fame ballot series, I looked at how Sammy Sosa's 2001 season ranked among seasons that did not lead their league. For my 2014 Hall-of-Fame ballot series, I looked at Sammy Sosa's peak and how he ranked among major-leaguers within it.

This year's article sort of follows up on last year's. Although Sammy Sosa played 18 seasons in the major-leagues, this includes four seasons early in his career where he wasn't fully developed as a player and two seasons (over three years) at the end of his career where he was just hanging on. Sosa's Hall-of-Fame case is centered on the 12 years in between, his age 24 through 35 seasons (1993 - 2004).

The next table identifies the ten players most similar to Sammy Sosa in career values from age 24 through age 35. Because Sammy Sosa rates considerably better in (context-neutral, teammate-adjusted) eWins than in pWins (which tie to team wins), the results below exclude context.

On the one hand, this is an impressive list of players. Of the nine players eligible for the Hall of Fame, six of them are in the Hall of Fame and 8 of the 9 players are in the Hall of Merit.

On the other hand, the two players most similar to Sosa over this age range are not in the Hall of Fame (Smith is in the Hall of Merit), the third player on the list was not elected into the Hall of Fame until after he died (and 38 years after his last season as a player).

An interesting coincidence: the two Hall-of-Famers most similar to Sammy Sosa over this age range spent their careers with the same team as Sosa: the Chicago Cubs (for whom they rank as 3 of the top 6 players of the past 80 years).
