This is Fred McGriff's seventh year on the Hall-of-Fame ballot. In my 2013 Hall-of-Fame ballot series, I looked at the best first baseman in MLB for every 5-year stretch of McGriff's career. In my 2014 Hall-of-Fame ballot series, I looked at every player who accumulated at least 14 pWins in 15 (or more) consecutive seasons. For my 2015 Hall-of-Fame ballot series, I looked at where McGriff ranks among the all-time first basemen for the teams for which he played.

Typically, when one talks about the players most "similar" to another player, one thinks of players who play the same position - first base, in the case of Fred McGriff - and who fit the same general profile - e.g., power hitter, in the case of Fred McGriff. I think, however, that sometimes it can be more enlightening to look at players who were similar in value but accrued that value in very different ways.

The next table, then, shows the 10 players most similar to Fred McGriff in overall value (pWOPA, pWORL, eWOPA, eWORL) without regard to how that value was accumulated - i.e., no consideration of batting, baserunning, pitching, fielding, or position, except insofar as those things combined into total value.

As one might expect, it's an eclectic set of names - pitchers, a (mostly) catcher, a couple of infielders, a few outfielders - and, at the bottom of the list, a player who was truly very similar to Fred McGriff: Carlos Delgado, a slugging first baseman with great power, poor baserunning, and limited fielding value.

The next table compares Fred McGriff to the pitcher most similar to him in career value, long-time Angels pitcher Chuck Finley.

They really are quite a good match. Finley had the best season between the two - as measured by pWOPA and pWORL - in 1990 - but McGriff had the second-best season (1994 - which would have almost certainly bested Finley's 1990 season but for the players' strike). Finley beat McGriff in seasons with pWOPA greater than 1 (7 - 6) and in seasons with pWORL greater than 2 (10 - 7), but McGriff beat Finley in seasons with pWORL over 2.5 (5 - 3).
