This is Roger Clemens's fourth year on the Hall-of-Fame ballot. In my 2013 Hall-of-Fame ballot series, I compared Clemens to Mickey Mantle. In my 2014 Hall-of-Fame ballot series, I compared Clemens to Sandy Koufax and then attempted to identify the player's most similar in career value to the excess value of Clemens in his career over Koufax. For 2015, I compared Roger Clemens to Warren Spahn.

Based purely on the numbers, Roger Clemens had an excellent career. Perhaps the most impressive thing about Clemens's career, as represented in the above table, is the fact that Roger Clemens never had a below-average season at any point in his career. In fact, this is true both within (pWOPA) and out of context (eWOPA). Needless to say, this is extremely rare. The table below presents the career records for all players who had a value of pWOPA (pWins over positional average) greater than zero for every season of their career.

Roger Clemens certainly stands out in that table in terms of career length. But it's actually a somewhat eclectic group of players. Obviously, they were all excellent players, but it's certainly not a list of the very best players for whom I have calculated Player won-lost records. Even the truly great players had the occasional below-average seasons during their career, especially at the beginning (e.g., Barry Bonds misses this table because of -0.2 pWOPA in his rookie season, 1986) or end (e.g., Hank Aaron was below average in his final two seasons as a Milwaukee Brewer DH).

The next table, then, looks at players who were able to amass at least 20 consecutive seasons of positive pWOPA in their careers.

Players with (pWOPA > 0) for 20 consecutive seasons

Even here, Roger Clemens stands at the top of the heap with 24 consecutive seasons of above average performance.
