This is Gary Sheffield's 3rd year on the BBWAA Hall-of-Fame ballot. Last year, he appeared on 11.6% of ballots.

Gary Sheffield had six seasons in his career in which he earned at least 2.0 pWins over Positional Average (pWOPA) and 3.5 pWins over Replacement Level (pWORL). And not entirely coincidentally, Gary Sheffield had six top-10 MVP seasons.

Those tend to be levels of pWOPA and pWORL that would warrant MVP consideration. For example, in the 2016 NL, the 10th-best pWOPA was 2.1 (by Kyle Hendricks) and the 10th-best pWORL was 3.4 (by Addison Russell). So, one could perhaps think of a 2.0/3.5 pWOPA/pWORL season as an "MVP-Candidate" season.

The next table shows all players who had six or more such seasons since 1961.
