This is Ivan Rodriguez's first year appearing on a Hall-of-Fame ballot.

Ivan Rodriguez won 13 Gold Gloves in his major-league career, more than any other catcher and more than all but three players at any position (Greg Maddux, Jim Kaat, and Brooks Robinson; Ozzie Smith also won 13 Gold Gloves). Rodriguez is regarded by many as the finest defensive catcher in major-league history.

Player won-lost records agree with this assessment. The next table shows the top 10 catchers in net career fielding wins among players for whom I have calculated Player won-lost records.

Only Gary Carter is close to Rodriguez. In fact, the third-best defensive catcher, as measured by Player won-lost records, 6-time Gold Glove winner Jim Sundberg, is closer to the 15th place than to 1st place.
