A Look at First-Year Expansion Teams

In my article on Jeff Conine as part of my series on the 2013 Hall-of-Fame Ballot, I looked at the career Player won-lost records of the members of the very first Florida Marlins team (of which Jeff Conine was a member).

This report looks at the first-year teams for all 14 major-league expansion teams.

The careers of several of the players on the 1961 Angels started before Retrosheet has complete play-by-play data, so that the Player won-lost records shown here are somewhat incomplete. This is true, for example, of Eddie Yost, Ted Kluszewski, and Ned Garver.

The 1961 Angels did not have a Hall-of-Famer on their roster, but they did have the son of one: Earl Averill, Jr.

The top two players (in terms of career pWORL) on the 1961 Senators were two pitchers at opposite ends of their careers. Mike Garcia was 37 years old and in the final year of a 14-year career. Claude Osteen was 21 years old and in the 4th year of what would turn out to be an 18-year career. Between them, Garcia's and Osteen's careers spanned 28 seasons: from 1948 through 1975.

The members of the 1998 Diamondbacks had the most combined career postseason games played of any first-year expansion team, 309. This is largely due to two things: (1) the playoffs are longer with more teams making them now than when the first 10 expansion teams debuted, and (2) the Diamondbacks made the playoffs faster than any other expansion team, winning the NL West in their second season in existence.

The 1998 Devil Rays are one of two first-year expansions teams with a Hall-of-Famer: Wade Boggs (although the 1993 Marlins have two possible future HOF candidates in Gary Sheffield and Trevor Hoffman).

Three first-year expansion teams had a player who amassed 40 career pWORL. In two cases, Wade Boggs and Gil Hodges, the expansion teams caught them at the end of their careers, after they had already compiled those 40 pWORL. In the case of Gary Sheffield, the Marlins actually got him for some of his prime (although, measured by pWORL, he ended up peaking somewhat later in his 30s).

The Kansas City Royals and Seattle Mariners had the lowest "best career record" of any first-year expansion teams. And finally, total career records of all of the players on each first-year expansion team.

The most total career pWORL by the players on a first-year expansion team were earned by the 1993 Florida Marlins. This is due largely to the presence on the Marlins of Gary Sheffield (if you subtract the top player from every team, the Marlins drop to 1st in total career pWORL). The Marlins are also the only first-year expansion team whose roster had a positive career pWOPA.

The two least successful expansion rosters, over their careers, were the 1969 San Diego Padres and the 1977 Seattle Mariners.

Somewhat interesting (to me, anyway), the three expansion teams who have moved to a different metropolitan area - the Senators, the Expos, and the Pilots all end up in the top half of the above table. Not that this really means anything.
