Kirby Puckett was the starting centerfielder on two World Series winners. Puckett played very well in both World Series - and in both ALCS's those years. By far his best postseason performance was his next-to-last postseason game: Game 6 of the 1991 World Series.

The 1991 World Series is probably best remembered for Game 7, when Jack Morris pitched a 10-inning, complete-game shutout and the Twins won the World Series, 1 - 0. What is perhaps somewhat less remembered is that the Twins also won Game 6 in extra innings - in 11 innings, to be exact. And what Jack Morris was to Game 7, Kirby Puckett was to Game 6.

1991 World Series, Game 6: The Kirby Puckett Game

1st Inning
Kirby Puckett batted third in the Twins' lineup in Game 6 of the 1991 World Series. His first plate appearance came in the bottom of the first inning of a 0 - 0 game. Puckett came up with one out and a runner on first base (Chuck Knoblauch). Puckett got the scoring started with a triple down the left field line to score Knoblauch. Puckett then scored on an RBI single by Shane Mack.

3rd Inning
Puckett's next plate appearance was by far his least dramatic of the game. He struck out in the middle of a 1-2-3 third inning with the Twins still leading 2 - 0.

5th Inning
The Braves tied the score in the top of the fifth inning on a two-run home run by Terry Pendleton.

Puckett un-tied it in the bottom of the inning with a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield.

8th Inning
The Braves re-tied the score in the top of the seventh inning. The Twins had only 3 batters apiece in both the sixth and seventh innings (both of which ended on GDPs), so Puckett didn't get to bat again until the bottom of the 8th inning.

Puckett batted with the bases empty and one out. He lined a single to right field. With two outs, he then stole second base to put the potential go-ahead run in scoring position. Alas, Shane Mack flied out to left field and the game remained tied.

11th Inning
The game remained tied going into the bottom of the eleventh inning.

After Puckett's eighth-inning single, eight straight Twins were retired through the end of the tenth inning. Presumably, the memory of being stranded in scoring position three innings earlier stuck with Puckett. Because he left no such possibility here in the eleventh.

Home run to left-center field. And, as Jack Buck said, "We'll see you tomorrow night".

All articles are written so that they pull data directly from the most recent version of the Player won-lost database. Hence, any numbers cited within these articles should automatically incorporate the most recent update to Player won-lost records. In some cases, however, the accompanying text may have been written based on previous versions of Player won-lost records. I apologize if this results in non-sensical text in any cases.
