The 2010s

The 2010s as seen through the Prism of Player Won-Lost Records

The completion of 2019 season completes the decade of the 2010s. I have written articles about each of the individual seasons of this decade, which can be found here. This article takes a look at the decade of the 2010s as measured by Player won-lost records.

The Best of The 2010s

I calculate Player won-lost records two ways: pWins, which tie to team wins and eWins, which control for context and the ability of one's teammates. For players with more pWins than eWins, their Player wins contributed to more team wins than one might expect; for players with more eWins than pWins, just the opposite is true: their Player wins translated into fewer team wins than expected. Or more briefly: a player with more pWins than eWins was better in context, a player with more eWins than pWins was worse in context.

Noteworthy Players of the 2010s

Mike Trout
The best player of the 2010s, in each of the first four tables of this article - i.e., as measured by either pWins or eWins over either positional average or replacement level - should be no surprise to anybody who watched any major-league baseball during this decade. All Mike Trout did in the 2010s was win three MVP awards and finish second in MVP voting four times.

So, how does Mike Trout's dominance of the 2010s compare to the top players of earlier decades? My source is Retrosheet data for which I have complete play-by-play data since 1932 and partial play-by-play data since 1918. Setting aside the 1920s, where (a) I am still missing quite a bit of data, and (b) we all know the best player of the 1920s was anyway, the next table shows the top player of each decade, as measured by eWOPA within the decade. For the 1930s, I have extrapolated missing games for the earliest seasons based on the games for which I do have play-by-play data. I chose eWOPA because Mike Trout looks a little bit better in eWins than in pWins and a little bit better when measured against positional average than against replacement level - not that Mike Trout looks anything but excellent no matter how you measure his career value to date.

Trout stacks up reasonably well against what is an extremely impressive list of players in that table.

Clayton Kershaw
The best pitcher - and second-best player - of the 2010s, as measured by Player won-lost records, is also probably not much of a surprise. All Clayton Kershaw did in the 2010s was win three Cy Young awards and an MVP award, with two second-place and one third-place finish in Cy Young voting.

All of the aforementioned votes happened between 2011 and 2017, over which time Kershaw had a traditional won-lost record of 118-41 (17-6 per season) with 1,623 strikeouts and a 2.10 ERA in 1,452 IP (232 K in 207 IP per season).

The next table shows the top 25 pitchers for whom I have calculated Player won-lost records, ranked by career pWins over positional average.

Clayton Kershaw already ranks among the all-time great pitchers in major-league history. And (hopefully) he's not done yet.

Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander
The player with the third-most pWins and eWins over both positional average and replacement level, Max Scherzer, matched Clayton Kershaw with three Cy Young awards in the decade. Close behind Scherzer is a pitcher who matched Kershaw's five top-2 Cy Young finishes and one MVP award, Justin Verlander.

Max Scherzer's and Justin Verlander's careers, as measured by Player won-lost records, are compared in the next table.

Verlander had a two-year (plus two game) head start on Scherzer. But since the two have both been in the league, they have been remarkably close in (regular-season) value.

Robinson Cano
Finally, let's look at a player whose ranks in the first four tables might come as a bit of a surprise. As measured by Player won-lost records, the second-best non-pitcher in pWins over either positional average or replacement level was Yankees, Mariners, and Mets second baseman Robinson Cano.

In fact, Robinson Cano actually led the major leagues in pWins during the 2010s.

Article last updated: December 31, 2019

Wins over positional average and replacement level are calculated using single-season data. Positional averages for starting pitching and relief pitching are calculated using single-year data for all starting pitchers and all relief pitchers.

All articles are written so that they pull data directly from the most recent version of the Player won-lost database. Hence, any numbers cited within these articles should automatically incorporate the most recent update to Player won-lost records. In some cases, however, the accompanying text may have been written based on previous versions of Player won-lost records. I apologize if this results in non-sensical text in any cases.
