Philadelphia Phillies at Chicago Cubs, Wrigley Field, Chicago, IL
September 29, 1985

Introduction

After a magical 1984 season, the 1985 season did not go the way Cubs fans had hoped (but good news, Chicagoans; Bears season had started!). They entered play on Sunday, September 29, 1985 with a record of 73-81, in fourth place in the National League East. Their opponent that day was the Philadelphia Phillies, only two years removed from their own division title, but mired in fifth place, 1-1/2 games behind the Cubs.

The pitching matchup for the game was Steve Trout, who entered the game at 8-6 with a 3.49 ERA in an injury-shortened season, versus Freddie Toliver, in search of his first major-league win in his 13th major-league game (and third start).

First Inning
Not many baserunners in the first inning, but the ones that were there were aggressive. Juan Samuel successfully stole second base after his two-out single in the top of the inning (but got no farther), while Ryne Sandberg was caught stealing second to end the bottom of the first.

Second Inning
The Phillies had no opportunity for baserunning - aggressive or otherwise - in the top of the second as they were retired 1-2-3.

The Cubs, meanwhile, didn't need to be terribly aggressive. Jody Davis and Ron Cey walked with one out. The next batter, Richie Hebner, doubled home Davis, with Cey stopping at third. Billy Hatcher flew out to center field, deep enough for Cey to score, and the Cubs led 2-0 after two innings.

Third Inning
Trout remained strong through three innings, having limited the Phillies to two two-out singles through three innings.

Freddie Toliver seemed to have settled down after his rough second inning, getting two quick outs. The third batter of the inning, Ryne Sandberg, hit a grounder to shortstop Luis Aguayo. But Aguayo booted the ball and the inning continued. Sandberg tried to steal second base - and was more successful than in the first inning. Keith Moreland singled to score Sandberg and Jody Davis doubled to score Moreland. Toliver finally settled down and struck out Ron Cey to end the inning. But the damage was done and the Cubs led 4-0.

Fourth Inning
The Phillies, however, didn't roll over and concede the game. Juan Samuel got things started with his second single and second stolen base of the day. Future Hall-of-Famer and notorious Cubs killer Mike Schmidt (Schmidt batted .307/.396/.653 with 50 home runs in 138 career games at Wrigley Field) followed with a single (fun fact: Mike Schmidt - who won Gold Gloves at third base in 1984 and 1986 - played mostly first base for the Phillies in 1985; he played 106 games at first base - including this one - versus only 54 games at third base).

The next batter, Glenn Wilson, hit the ball to the shortstop, but Shawon Dunston matched Aguayo in the previous inning and bobbled the ball, Samuel scoring on the play. Ozzie Virgil forced Wilson, Schmidt taking third base, and Garry Maddox hit a sacrifice fly, and the Phillies had two runs in the inning.

Toliver retired the Cubs 1-2-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning and the game went to the fifth inning with the Cubs holding a 4-2 lead.

Fifth Inning
Freddy Toliver led off the top of the fifth inning with the first major-league hit of his career. But the next batter, Aguayo, hit into a double play.

The Cubs had the top of their lineup up in the bottom of the fifth inning. And they took advantage.

Bobby Dernier singled. Dunston fouled out while trying to sacrifice. Dernier got to second shortly thereafter, however, thanks to an errant pickoff throw by Toliver. Ryne Sandberg struck out for the second out of the inning. But Moreland singled home Dernier and Davis followed with another single, putting Moreland on third base.

Thus ended Freddie Toliver's day. On came former Pirates fireman Kent Tekulve, in his first season as a Phillie. Tekulve got Ron Cey to fly out to Maddox in center field and the inning was over. But not before the Cubs had pushed their lead to 5-2.

Sixth - Seventh Innings
Nothing much happened the next two innings: two singles, a walk, a stolen base, two strikeouts, and a double play, not all in the same inning.

Eighth Inning
Steve Trout showed no signs of tiring in the eighth inning, retiring the Phillies 1-2-3 in the top of the eighth inning.

In the bottom of the inning, Richie Hebner hit a two-out home run to make the score 6-2. Billy Hatcher followed with a triple but Hatcher was stranded on third as Trout grounded out to end the inning.

Ninth Inning
Trout entered the ninth inning looking for his third complete game of the 1985 season. The first batter, Glenn Wilson, grounded out to Ryne Sandberg. Next up was Ozzie Virgil. He grounded out to Shawon Dunston. So far, so good.

Garry Maddox managed a two-out single, though. But Phillies left fielder John Russell hit a grounder to Dunston, who tossed to Sandberg at second for the force.

Ballgame. Cubs win, 6-2!

Game Summary

Freddie Toliver took the loss, falling to 0-3 on the season. It would take two more years before Toliver finally got that elusive first major-league win. He would end his seven-year career with a lifetime record of 10-16. Steve Trout improved to 9-6 on the season. He would never win that many games in a season again, retiring after the 1989 season with a career record of 88-92.

As measured by Player won-lost records, the biggest star of the game was Trout, who allowed only one earned run on seven hits and two walks (with no strikeouts). Besides Trout, the top hitter for the Cubs was Richie Hebner who drove in the Cubs' first and last runs of the game. Other key contributors included Keith Moreland (2-for-4, 2 RBI), Jody Davis (2-for-3, 1 R, 1 RBI), and Ryne Sandberg (1-for-4 with a run scored, part of two double plays on defense).

With this win, the Cubs extended their lead over the Phillies to 2-1/2 games. And that's exactly how the two teams finished the 1985 season: the Cubs finished in fourth place at 77-84; the Phillies were 2-1/2 games behind in fifth place at 75-87.

Don't worry Cubs fans. There's always next year!

Details of the game are shown below. First, I show Player won-lost records for all of the players who participated in the game. Baseball Player won-lost records are constructed so that the players on the winning team earn two pWins and one pLoss in the game while the players on the losing team earn one pWin and two pLosses. I also show expected wins and losses, eWins and eLosses, which are context-neutral. Full play by play details of the game are shown below the won-lost tables. My Player won-lost records are described in more detail in this article and throughout my website.

Article last updated: March 22, 2020

All articles are written so that they pull data directly from the most recent version of the Player won-lost database. Hence, any numbers cited within these articles should automatically incorporate the most recent update to Player won-lost records. In some cases, however, the accompanying text may have been written based on previous versions of Player won-lost records. I apologize if this results in non-sensical text in any cases.
