Milwaukee Brewers at Detroit Tigers, Tiger Stadium, Detroit, MI
June 28, 1986

Introduction

The Detroit Tigers of the 1980s were thisclose to being a dynasty. The 1984 Tigers were one of the greatest teams in major-league history, a fact that I think is sometimes missed because they "only" won 104 games - which included a 35-5 start, an 11-4 finish to the regular season, and a 7-1 record in the postseason. In the pre-playoff era, the Tigers would have made two World Series in four seasons (1984 and 1987). In the three-division, Wild Card era, the Tigers probably would have made the playoffs five times in six seasons (three hypothetical AL Central titles and two hypothetical wild-card berths). But in the two-division era, the Tigers had to settle for two AL East titles and just the one World Series title.

The 1986 Tigers did not get off to a 35-5 start. In fact, they had just won their 35th game of the 1986 season the day before this game, their third straight win which had improved their record to 35-35. Their opponent, the Milwaukee Brewers entered play one game ahead of the Tigers, but headed in the opposite direction, having lost three straight games to drop their record to 36-34.

The starting pitching matchup for the game saw the Tigers go with 25-year-old Randy O'Neal, who entered the game with a record of 1-3 and a 4.39 ERA, while the Brewers countered with 23-year-old rookie Bill Wegman (2-6, 4.70).

First Inning
The first batter of the game was Ernest Riles, who singled to center field. He was followed by Robin Yount, who walked. Cecil Cooper singled, loading the bases, and that was it Randy O'Neal. There was a reason why Tigers manager Sparky Anderson was nicknamed "Captain Hook".

The Tigers new pitcher was Dave LaPoint. He retired the next three batters, but the first two outs were via ground-outs which scored a pair of runs.

The Tigers got one of the two runs back in the bottom of the inning on a two-out home run from Kirk Gibson.

Second Inning
The second inning was pretty uneventful. LaPoint extended his perfect string to six batters with a 1-2-3 top of the inning while Wegman worked around a two-out hit-by-pitch (of Chet Lemon, who led the AL four times in times hit-by-pitch).

Third Inning
LaPoint got Riles on a comebacker to the mound and struck out Yount giving him 8 men retired out of 8 batters faced. Cecil Cooper snapped that streak with a single up the middle and the threat of a rally mounted as Ben Oglivie doubled, putting runners on second and third. But LaPoint settled down and struck out Billy Jo Robidoux to end the threat.

In the bottom of the third inning, Wegman continued to look good, pitching his first 1-2-3 inning of the game.

Fourth Inning
LaPoint's third-inning struggles continued in the fourth as Rob Deer and Dale Sveum singled to start the inning. As in the third inning, though, after allowing two baserunners, LaPoint bore down and struck out the next batter. And when the next batter, Jim Gantner, hit a ground ball to second baseman Lou Whitaker, it seemed that LaPoint might have gotten through another inning.

Alas, Whitaker erred on the play and Deer was able to score from second base with the Brewers' third run of the game. LaPoint did get the next two batters, but the Brewers now led 3-1.

Kirk Gibson got things started for the Tigers in the bottom of the fourth inning with a leadoff single. But the next two batters struck out and the situation looked bleak.

But Dave Bergman drew a walk to keep the inning going. And Chet Lemon singled to left field, scoring Gibson. Pat Sheridan followed with a single to center field, scoring Bergman with the tying run and putting Lemon on third base.

That ended Bill Wegman's day. The new Brewers pitcher was Bob Gibson - no, not that one; this Robert Gibson had a 5-season, 98-game career from 1983 - 1987.

Sheridan stole second to put two runners in scoring position. And Tom Brookens scored them both with a double to right-center field. Lou Whitaker flew out for the third out but not before the Tigers had taken a 5-3 lead.

Fifth Inning
Dave LaPoint came out for his fifth inning of relief. So far, he'd pitched well, allowing only a single unearned run on four hits.

The fifth inning should have been an easy one for LaPoint as he allowed two easy fly balls and a routine grounder to the first three batters he faced. But Dave Bergman bobbled Ben Oglivie's ground ball, letting Oglivie reach first base safely and bringing Rob Deer to bat with two outs and a runner on first base. Deer put the ball into the left-center field stands and the game was tied at 5.

Alan Trammell singled to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs, Kirk Gibson (who had hit into a force play) stole second base and Darrell Evans walked. But Bergman flew out to left field and the game remained tied.

Sixth Inning
With one out in the top of the sixth inning, the Brewers threatened to untie the game. Jim Gantner doubled and Ernest Riles singled, putting runners on first and third and prompting a pitching change.

The new Tigers pitcher was Bill Campbell. He got Robin Yount to hit a grounder to Trammell at short. Trammell flipped to Whitaker - as he did so many times in their long careers; Whitaker tossed to Bergman to complete the 6-4-3 double play and the inning was over.

Gibson pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth inning and the game moved to the seventh inning still tied at 5.

Seventh Inning
Campbell pitched a solid top of the seventh inning, a two-out walk to Robideaux being followed by a called strike three to Deer.

The bottom of the seventh inning started off similarly as Whitaker and Trammell both flew out to center field. Kirk Gibson hit a ground ball to Jim Gantner at second base which should have been the third out of the inning. But instead, it was the third error of the game, with Gibson reaching second base on the play. Lance Parrish hit a line drive single to left field and the score was no longer tied.

And so ended Bob Gibson's day. The new Brewers pitcher was Ray Searage.

The first batter to face Searage was Darrell Evans who hit the ball into the left-center field stands to give the Tigers an 8-5 lead. The three errors in the game had all led to unearned runs - a total of six unearned runs (although Evans's run was scored as earned against Searage but unearned to the Brewers as a team).

Eighth Inning
The eighth inning was uneventful. Campbell pitched a 1-2-3 top of the inning. And the fourth Brewers pitcher, Mark Clear worked around a two-out single and passed ball to pitch a scoreless bottom of the inning.

Ninth Inning
So, Bill Campbell came out for his third full inning of work in the ninth inning looking to preverse the Tigers' 8-5 lead. As things stood, Campbell was in line for the pitching win, which would be his second of the season, while Gibson was on the hook for what would be his first loss of the season.

While they were down three runs, the Brewers did have the top of the lineup batting for them.

Leadoff hitter Riles walked to give the Brewers a glimmer of hope. Robin Yount bunted - one presumes trying to fool the defense and reach base, bringing the tying run to the plate. Campbell threw Yount out, with Riles advancing to second (Yount was given credit for a sacrifice on the play). Cecil Cooper struck out for the second out, leaving Ben Oglivie as the Brewers' last hope. Oglivie lifted a fly ball to left field. And when Pat Sheridan caught the ball, the game was over and the Tigers had beaten the Brewers by a final score of 8 to 5.

Game Summary

This game was the fourth win in a row for the Detroit Tigers and fourth consecutive loss for the Milwaukee Brewers as the two teams moved into a (3-way with the Cleveland Indians) tie for fifth place in the AL East. Both streaks eventually became five-game streaks. They also were strong indications of how the rest of the season would go for both teams. The Tigers had a strong second half and finished in third place with a record of 87-75, while the Brewers slumped to a final record of 77-84, good for sixth place.

Article last updated: April 6, 2020

All articles are written so that they pull data directly from the most recent version of the Player won-lost database. Hence, any numbers cited within these articles should automatically incorporate the most recent update to Player won-lost records. In some cases, however, the accompanying text may have been written based on previous versions of Player won-lost records. I apologize if this results in non-sensical text in any cases.
