Tampa Bay Rays at Seattle Mariners, Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, CA
June 2, 2001

Introduction

The weekend series in Seattle to open the third month of the 2001 season featured two teams headed in opposite directions. With their 8-4 win the night before, the Seattle Mariners improved to a major-league best 41-12 with a 15-game lead in the AL West, while their opponent, the 3-year-old Tampa Bay Devil Rays fell to a major-league worst 15-39.

The pitching matchup for Saturday pitted Paul Abbott, who entered the game with a record of 3-2, against Ryan Rupe (2-4).

First Inning
Baseball can be a funny game. More often than in other sports, sometimes very bad teams can surprise very good teams. And early on, it looked like that might be the case here in Seattle. After two quick outs, Fred McGriff drew a walk. And Greg Vaughn, who three years earlier had hit 50 home runs, launched his 14th home run of the 2001 season, to give the Devil Rays a 2-0 lead.

Sometimes very bad teams can surprise very good teams. But more often, very good teams show why they are, in fact, very good teams.

Here, then, is how the bottom of the first inning started.

And just like that, the Mariners had a 5-2 lead without having made an out in the first inning. Devil Rays' starter Ryan Rupe finally settled down at that point and got out of the inning with no further damage. But the Mariners led 5-2 at the end of the first inning.

Second Inning
The Devil Rays didn't exactly roll over. Walks to Aubrey Huff and Mike Difelice put two runners on with only one out and brought the tying run to the plate. Alas, Andy Sheets popped out and Randy Winn struck out and the rally fizzled before it even really started.

Rupe, meanwhile, seemed to have settled down after his rough start and retired the Mariners in order in the bottom of the second.

Third Inning
The third inning was mostly uneventful. Fred McGriff walked for the second time in the game, but this time he was stranded at first base. Rupe pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the third, extending his string to nine consecutive batters retired.

Fourth Inning
Rupe's string of consecutive batters retired would not reach double digits however. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Rupe hit the leadoff batter, Tom Lampkin, and doubles by Ichiro Suzuki and Edgar Martinez produced two more runs, extending the Mariners' lead to 7-2.

Fifth Inning
A single by McGriff and a double by Greg Vaughn put two runners in scoring position for the Devil Rays in the top of the fifth inning. But both hits came with two outs and Steve Cox flew out to center field to end the threat.

The bottom of the fifth inning saw a new pitcher for the Devil Rays, Jeff Wallace. Wallace worked around a one-out single by Tom Lampkin to pitch a scoreless inning.

Sixth Inning
The sixth inning saw a new pitcher for the Mariners, Ryan Franklin. He gave up a leadoff single to Aubrey Huff, but then got two quick outs. The Devil Rays finally came through with two outs, however, as singles by Sheets and Winn produced one run and put runners at 1st and 3rd. Alas, Sheets couldn't get past third base as Russ Johnson flew out to right field for the final out.

Seventh Inning
The seventh inning again saw the Devil Rays threaten, as the first two batters, McGriff and Vaughn, reached base, via a single and hit-by-pitch, respectively. That was all for Franklin. Brian Fuentes got Steve Cox to ground out, advancing runners to second and third with one out. Aubrey Huff hit a line drive, but right at Bret Boone for the second out. Jose Paniagua came out of the Mariners' bullpen and got Gerald Williams to fly out to left field, ending the inning with the Devil Rays still trailing 7-3.

The bottom of the seventh inning was uneventul as Wallace wrapped up his night with three shutout innings, helped out by double plays in the sixth and seventh innings.

Eighth Inning
Mike Difelice led off the top of the eighth inning with his first home run of 2001. But the only other offense the Devil Rays could muster in the inning was a one-out walk by Randy Winn.

Esteban Yan came out of the bullpen for the Devil Rays and pitched a scoreless inning, working around a two-out walk to Al Martin by striking out Edgar Martinez.

Ninth Inning
The Mariners brought their closer, Kazuo Sasaki, out of the bullpen to save their 7-4 lead and he did so with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Jason Tyner lined out to third base; Steve Cox struck out; Aubrey Huff lined out to right field. And Sasaki had his 22nd save of the season.

Game Summary

With their 7-4 win, the Mariners improved to 42-12 on the season and extended their lead in the AL West to 16 games. Paul Abbott improved to 4-2 on the season. The Devil Rays dropped to 15-40 with Ryan Rupe falling to 2-5 on the season.

As was the case for much of the 2001 season, credit for the Mariners victory was shared fairly widely across multiple players - the six batters who reached base consecutively to start the bottom of the first inning as well as the final three relief pitchers of the game, who helped to overcome somewhat shaky pitching performances by Abbott and Franklin (who allowed a combined 13 baserunners in 6+ innings pitched). All in all, a fine performance for the 45,473 fans in attendance.

Details of the game are shown below. First, I show Player won-lost records for all of the players who participated in the game. Baseball Player won-lost records are constructed so that the players on the winning team earn two pWins and one pLoss in the game while the players on the losing team earn one pWin and two pLosses. I also show expected wins and losses, eWins and eLosses, which are context-neutral. Full play by play details of the game are shown below the won-lost tables. My Player won-lost records are described in more detail in this article and throughout my website.

All articles are written so that they pull data directly from the most recent version of the Player won-lost database. Hence, any numbers cited within these articles should automatically incorporate the most recent update to Player won-lost records. In some cases, however, the accompanying text may have been written based on previous versions of Player won-lost records. I apologize if this results in non-sensical text in any cases.
