Seattle Mariners at Toronto Blue Jays, Exhibition Stadium, Toronto, Ontario
July 9, 1988

Introduction

In 1977, the American League expanded from 12 to 14 teams, adding new teams in Seattle and Toronto. Over the next eleven seasons, the Mariners and Blue Jays had gone in somewhat different directions. The Blue Jays had a winning record for the first time in 1983, won the American League East for the first time in 1985, and narrowly missed winning the division in 1987. The Blue Jays entered the 1988 season with five consecutive winning seasons.

The Seattle Mariners, on the other hand, entered the 1988 season having never had a winning season.

The 1988 season had not started out quite so well for the Blue Jays, however, and they entered their final series before the All-Star break with a record of 40-45. Their Friday night win over the Mariners improved their record to 41-45 and dropped the Mariners record to 33-52.

The pitching matchup for Game Two of the series was rookie Todd Stottlemyre (3-7, 4.54 ERA) versus Scott Bankhead (3-3, 2.98 ERA).

First Inning
Harold Reynolds, more recently of MLB Network fame, got things started on the right foot for the Mariners with a leadoff single. Reynolds stole second base (fun fact: Reynolds led the American League in stolen bases in 1987 with 60, making him the only player other than Rickey Henderson to lead the AL in stolen bases in a season during the 1980s) and took third base as Rey Quinones singled to center field. Blue Jays center fielder, Sil Campusano, bobbled the ball, allowing Quinones to reach second base.

The next batter, Mickey Brantley hit a fly ball to Campusano, scoring Reynolds with the game's first run. Campusano made his second error in as many plays, letting Quinones get to third base. But the next batter, Ken Phelps popped out to the shortstop and the Mariners had to settle for just a single run.

Scott Bankhead came out to protect the lead and he started strong, retiring the first two batters. But reigning AL MVP George Bell doubled to left field and Kelly Gruber did the same and the score was tied at one. The Blue Jays briefly threatened to add on as Ernie Whitt walked, but Jesse Barfield hit into a force play and the inning was over.

Second Inning
The Mariners' leadoff batter reached base safely for the second consecutive inning, this time via a Jim Presley walk. He took second on a ground-out and scored on a single to center field by Greg Briley and the Mariners regained the lead, 2-1. Reynolds followed with a single to left field. Briley took third on the play and Reynolds advanced to second on the throw to third, putting two Mariners in scoring position with only one out. But Quinones popped out, Brantley lined out, and the inning was over with no further scoring.

The bottom of the second inning was the first scoreless half-inning of the game as Bankhead pitched a 1-2-3 inning including a strikeout of Sil Campusano.

Third Inning
The Mariners got the leadoff hitter on first base for the third straight inning. And for the second time in three innings, the second batter also reached base, as Ken Phelps and Scott Bradley singled. But Steve Balboni struck out, Presley hit into a force play (advancing Phelps to third base), and Dave Valle grounded out, and the Mariners failed to score for the first time in the game.

The Blue Jays, however, did not fail to score, as doubles by Rance Mulliniks and Kelly Gruber tied the score 2-2 through three innings.

Fourth Inning
The game was not tied for long, however. Greg Briley led off the top of the fourth inning with a solo home run and the Mariners had a 3-2 lead. But they were not content to stop at one run this time.

Final damage for the inning: 5 runs, 5 hits, 1 error, and the Mariners led 7-2.
Scott Bankhead continued his mostly solid pitching, working around a two-out walk to pitch a scoreless bottom of the fourth inning.

Fifth Inning
The fifth inning saw a bit of a break in the action. The Mariners were retired 1-2-3 for the first time in the game. And the Blue Jays would have also been retired 1-2-3 but for a two-out error by third baseman Jim Presley. But the next batter, Kelly Gruber, flew to right field and no harm was done.

Sixth Inning
Mark Eichhorn came out for his third inning of work in relief for the Blue Jays. This was nothing terribly unusual for Eichhorn. In 1987, he led the American League with 89 games pitched in which he pitched a total of 127-2/3 innings. That was actually a big letdown from 1986, when Eichhorn pitched 157 innings, all in relief, in 69 games. Eichhorn had entered this game having pitched 56 innings in 31 of the Blue Jays' first 85 games.

The Mariners' leadoff batter reached for the fifth time in six innings (a John Rabb single). And the Mariners' second batter of the inning reached safely for the fourth time - a Scott Bradley single. Eichhorn retired the next two batters, but couldn't get the third: Dave Valle doubled, scoring Bradley and Balboni (who had reached via a force play). Eichhorn got Greg Briley to foul out for the third out.

Briley was the last batter Eichhorn faced in this game. In fact, he was the last batter Eichhorn faced for almost two months.

Scott Bankhead showed a bit of weakness in the bottom of the inning - or perhaps just boredom from pitching with a 9-2 lead. Regardless, the Blue Jays scored a run on three hits - a Whitt double, an RBI single by Rick Leach, and a wasted single by Manuel Lee.

But the run hardly mattered as the Mariners led 9-3 with three innings remaining.

Seventh Inning
The seventh inning saw new pitchers for both teams. Jim Clancy pitched a 3-batter top of the seventh that went K-W-GDP. Mike Jackson (the pitcher, not the singer) also allowed a walk but struck out three batters.

Eighth Inning
Clancy's second inning of work was a lot like his first, except that it was a single that preceded the inning-ending double play. Jackson also allowed his first hit, a one-out double by Rick Leach, but, like Clancy, pitched his second scoreless inning of relief.

Ninth Inning
And so the game moved to the ninth inning with the Mariners still leading 9-3.

Clancy pitched his third straight 3-batter inning in the top of the ninth (this one his first 1-2-3 inning; no double play needed).

The Mariners turned to their third pitcher of the game, Rod Scurry, to close things out. Scurry started strong, striking out Nelson Liriano (who had entered the game defensively in the eighth inning) to start the inning. But two of the next three batters - Rance Mulliniks and Cecil Fielder (the latter of whom had entered the game defensively in the top of the inning - playing third base for the last time in his major-league career) - singled. But Scurry bore down and got Ernie Whitt to fly out to right field and Mariners had won the game.

Game Summary

Looking at the Player won-lost tables later in the article, it's hard to pick out a game MVP for the Mariners. This was a real team effort - at least on the offensive side. Nine different Mariners had either a run scored or an RBI (or both) in the game. On the pitching side, neither Bankhead (7 hits, 2 walks in 6 innings) nor Scurry (2 hits in 1 inning) were great but neither were particularly bad and Mike Jackson pitched two solid innings. Overall, a nice solid team win for a team that didn't get too many of those (they finished the season in seventh place in the AL West with a record of 68-93).

The Blue Jays, meanwhile, won the next game and six of their next seven to get up to 0.500. They puttered around a bit more but a six-game winning streak to start the month of September finally put them over 0.500 to stay. They finished the season in third place with a record of 87-75. The 1988 season was the sixth of what would eventually be eleven consecutive winning seasons which culminated with back-to-back World Series wins in 1992 and 1993.

Details of the game are shown below. First, I show Player won-lost records for all of the players who participated in the game. Baseball Player won-lost records are constructed so that the players on the winning team earn two pWins and one pLoss in the game while the players on the losing team earn one pWin and two pLosses. I also show expected wins and losses, eWins and eLosses, which are context-neutral. Full play by play details of the game are shown below the won-lost tables. My Player won-lost records are described in more detail in this article and throughout my website.

Article last updated: April 1, 2020

All articles are written so that they pull data directly from the most recent version of the Player won-lost database. Hence, any numbers cited within these articles should automatically incorporate the most recent update to Player won-lost records. In some cases, however, the accompanying text may have been written based on previous versions of Player won-lost records. I apologize if this results in non-sensical text in any cases.
