Nolan Ryan holds several major-league records: some positive - 5,714 career strikeouts - some not so positive - 2,795 career walks. His most impressive record, however, may well be his seven no-hitters - as many as any other two major-league pitchers combined (Sandy Koufax is the only other pitcher in major-league history with as many as 4 career no-hitters).

So, for this article, I thought I'd take a look at Nolan Ryan's 7 no-hitters.

No-Hitter #1: May 15, 1973
Nolan Ryan threw his first career no-hitter against the Kansas City Royals on May 15, 1973. Ryan allowed 0 runs on 0 hits, 3 walks, and 12 strikeouts, as the Angels beat the Royals, 3-0.

Here's how that game looks in Player won-lost records.

Ryan's sixth no-hitter was the only one of his no-hitters in which he did not lead his team in net pWins, which is fairly rare for a no-hitter. Julio Franco was actually the most valuable Texas Ranger in this game. Franco hit two two-run home runs: one in the first inning to give the Rangers a 2-0 lead, the other in the fifth inning to extend the Rangers' lead to 5-0 (where it ended).

Ryan's no-hit performance was better than Franco's performance when context was taken out of consideration. But, in context, Franco's performance was more valuable than expected, while Ryan's performance was somewhat less valuable than expected - Ryan was staked to a 2-0 lead before he threw a pitch and a 5-0 lead halfway through the game; in that situation, Ryan didn't need to throw a no-hitter.

No-Hitter #7: May 1, 1991
Nolan Ryan's seventh and final no-hitter came two weeks short of 18 years after his first career no-hitter. On May 1, 1991, Ryan's Texas Rangers beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 3-0, as Ryan allowed 0 runs on 0 hits, 2 walks, and 16 strikeouts.

Here's how that game looks in Player won-lost records.
